IRISH UNIVERSITIES CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Irish Universities championships took place in Irishtown Stadium on Friday and Saturday 18 & 19th April. As usual, there were a number of MSB athletes in action, which brought its share of medals and PBs for the athletes involved. Making his debut at Universities level after a highly successful schools career, John Coghlan (DCU) had to be content with a silver medal, losing out to Kevin Moriarty (UL) in a tactical 1500m. Elsewhere Ruth Carson earned silver as part of the Trinity 4 x 100 relay team which finished second to DCU. Earlier in the day, Ruth ran the final of the 100m but her new PB of 13.07 was only good enough to earn her 7th place. Another in PB form was Joe Barry who dipped under 12.0 for the first time in the 100m with 11.91. However, this effort was not enough to advance him out of the semi-final. Incidentally, on a very windy weekend, both Joe’s and Ruth’s PB times were achieved within the legal wind limits – both running with the aid of a 1.6m/s wind. Joe also competed in the 4 x 100 relay final for Trinity who finished 5th. Also on that team was Neil Cullen who also competed in the individual 100m & 400m events.
